I started shooting pictures many years ago. First with a Kodak Brownie camera and then, later, with a Pentax SLR film camera. As good as film was/is, I find that digital is better in a number of ways.
I certainly agree with those who say that there is a certain quality to a photograph shot on film. A kind of depth, if you will, that digital photography just does not seem to be able to capture. As far as I’m concerned though, that is more than offset by the tools available in the digital software that you can use to manipulate the photograph.......and no chemicals. And, when the end result is not up to par, a click and it’s gone. No wasted paper and other resources.
For me, the most interesting pictures are pictures of people. Except for identical twins, most people are unique in the way they look. Faces are all different. Some people have their trials and tribulations etched into their face. Others show not a line. There are those who show their emotions with a smile or a frown and others who are stone faced and reveal little.
Everyone has those candid moments when their guard is down, and their faces are open. And it is those candid slices of time I want to reveal. People unaware and in natural poses. It is that spontaneous point in time that reveals a bit – a tiny truth – of who they are at that particular moment I want to capture. To that end, I find that the black and white image more truthful. When color is eliminated, the essence of that individual becomes more visible. And, black and white is, by its very nature, more dramatic. The same holds true for pictures of landscapes. As beautiful as a picture of a butte is in color, it’s dramatic character is enhanced in black & white.
Don’t get me wrong. I like color or I wouldn’t have any color photos at all. A sunset in black and white is dull. A sunset in color brings forth the sound of trumpets. I love the abstracts in color. They lose their vitality when denied it. There are times when it’s the color that makes the picture work. Color. Black and White. Their both tools. Part of the tool bag available for use.
I live and work out of Santa Fe, NM and am available for both Personal and Performance shoots. I do not usually shoot weddings or social gatherings.
